CATHERINE BRIERLEY

Large scale precision-piecer .

Colour and tonal variation are the two main elements in my work. For each project, I enjoy searching for and collecting commercially produced cotton, cotton sateen and silk in a particular colour scheme, then selecting the colours, textures and tones that work best together for the desired effect.

I use freezer paper foundation machine piecing, which allows me to control very small shapes of fabric that often seem to have a will of their own. Working in cloth, I explore colour and line to make serene yet dynamic rhythms, often using tone to suggest an ambiguous illusion of space.

Inspiration comes from the visual world around me, especially the effect of light at different times of the day and subtle changes of colour during the year. I have a passion for colour, Japanese design and Abstract Art.

I am available for talks and workshops.
