I started to stitch in earnest after I retired as a social worker in 2002. At that time I looked around for a creative ‘hobby’ which used colour. This followed holidays in Asia when I became captivated by the designs and richness found in the textiles there, many of which were simplistic.

After visiting a Sewing for Pleasure exhibition in 2003 I went on to acquire and develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and techniques from generous members of the local Embroiderers Guild; I attended workshops run by little or well known textile artists; I joined a variety of textile groups and read many books.

It took over my life! I find working and experimenting with textiles fascinating and exciting and use a range of hand or machine stitching, dyeing techniques, printing, mixed media, etc. to develop my work and to achieve the effects I need.

As well as the influence of Asian textiles in my designs I am inspired by line and linear art which produces rhythm, fluency and movement as used by artists such as Bridget Riley and Dorothy Napangardi, and of course the glorious patterns of nature and architecture all around us.

I am currently taking a sabbatical from producing exhibition work - but still stitching for pleasure.
